Merrickville is located about 370km to the northeast of Toronto. It spans both shores of the Rideau River. Merrickville was founded in 1794 by William Merrick, Loyalist from Massachusetts.

Smiths Falls is situated on the Rideau Canal about 22km to the west of Merrickville and 20km to the east of Perth. In 1786 United Empire Loyalist Thomas Smyth was granted land in what is present-day Smiths Falls.

Westport is also located on the Rideau Canal about 50km to the south of Smiths Falls. The first settlers to this area arrived between 1810 and 1820. The village of Westport was incorporated in 1904.

Bobcaygeon is a community on the Trent–Severn Waterway in the City of Kawartha Lakes. It was incorporated as a village in 1876. It is located about 160km to northeast of Toronto.

We visited Merrickville, Smiths Falls and Westport in August 2002.
